Global Day for People + Planet

Team Australia | 2021

At Shaw Contract, we believe we have responsibility to each other and to our habitat, to people & planet.

To celebrate Global Volunteer Month, on Thursday 29th April our Shaw Contract team joined together around the globe to give back to our local communities. Starting on the east coast of Australia, to Asia and Middle East, passing the baton all around the globe, and finishing on the west coast of Canada - we gave associates time off to join their colleagues across the whole company to volunteer their services in local communities. Read more below about the incredible activities our Australian team were involved in!

Our team in Melbourne spent the day planting trees with Fifteen Trees, a local organisation who help individuals and businesses reduce their carbon footprint and combat the effects of climate change through sponsoring Australian community tree planting projects.

The Melbourne team organised to plant 500 native trees at “Narmbool Estate”. Owned and operated by Sovereign Hill Museum, Narmbool encompasses a number of significant ecosystems including pastures and grazing land, native bush and a variety of waterways. Sustainable farming is carefully balanced with environmental education, research and the enhancement of biodiversity through re-vegetation and habitat improvement.

Our team in Sydney & Canberra spent the day creating care packs for a local charity called “Every Little Bit Helps”. Established with the specific purpose of supporting people in need, their belief is that every Australian should have access to a toothbrush and a bar of soap, and that by providing basic toiletries to people in need they are providing them with not only the essentials, but also a little bit of dignity.

The Sydney team also volunteered time with the Sydney Street Kitchen and Blanket Patrol, to help organise the donations space and organise gift bags. Blanket Patrol offers crowdsourced blankets, sleeping bags, clothing, and toiletries available 24/7 distributed to the homeless community.

Our team in Brisbane donated Blood Plasma through the Australian Red Cross. Plasma donations can be used in 18 different life-giving ways, from treating serious burns and cancer, to protecting people with brain disorders or immune conditions.

The team donated time to the Pumicestone Passage Reef Rejuvenation project, by cleaning up rubbish on their local beach in Moreton Bay. This project also collects oyster shells from local restaurants, which are then used for restoring local oyster reefs. A donation was also made to Guide Dogs Queensland.

Our team in Perth volunteered their time at the Animal Protection Society of WA- a not for profit, pro-life refuge for homeless cats and dogs. The main goal of the APS is to care for abandoned animals whilst finding them a loving home with a responsible owner.

The team spent the day painting the kennels in optimistic bright colours, which help stop dog tails getting injured on the rough brick walls, with the added benefit of bringing some colour to their day.
