Project Description

In 2019 South 32 reviewed its accommodation strategy in their current headquarters using Listening, Learning and Evolving methodology. Three aspirational pillars emerged shaping the new workplace standard for South32 being Lifestyle, Connectivity and Flexibility. Covid-19 Pandemic turned notions of normality upside down. Employees were encouraged to learn new behaviours, adopt new technologies and adjust to new ways of working. Three existing fitted out floors were reduced to a single level and a vastly reduced environmental impact. In concert with a reduced footprint, the new workplace prioritized the implementation of flexible workstyles prioritizing functionality with a diverse menu of settings, each supporting diversity and inclusion. Importantly South 32 engaged its staff in an in-depth survey to ensure its Global Workplace Strategy could be adapted to local requirements and culture. New space in the form of an outdoor Workplace on a previously underused concrete deck was fashioned into a cluster of differing 3rd place experiences based around the communal design principles of the traditional South African Kraal. Local art firmly anchors the workplace with a strong sense of place. Craftsmen were commissioned to make ottomans in the reception from recycled plastic packets to traditional Zulu construction methods. All spaces benefit from borrowed natural light and extensive views. Shaw Carpets Backweave carpet tiles complete what has become a highly successful work destination that South 32’s Johannesburg employees have fully embraced, as reflected in post Covid occupancy data.
