Aston University's transformation of the Victorian Citadel building into the new John Cadbury House in Birmingham is a testament to sustainability and innovation.
The West Midlands Combined Authority supported the renovation of the building into a modern, sustainable hub for education, business, and innovation.
Andy Street, Mayor of the West Midlands and Chair of the WMCA, said “It exemplifies our commitment to sustainable development - where we think not just in terms of bricks and mortar but in terms of establishing beacons of hope and opportunity right across our region.
The refurbishment was driven by a vision to create a dynamic and inclusive environment aligned with Aston University's strategic emphasis on education, science, and enterprise.
Professor Aleks Subic, Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive of Aston University, said: “Our 2030 strategy defines Aston University as an inclusive, entrepreneurial and transformational university, building on our proud past as UK’s first college of technology, that is taking its rightful place in this Fourth Industrial Revolution.

Spanning over 46,000 square feet, the building now accommodates office, retail, and social spaces. It operates with a net zero carbon footprint, showcasing Aston University's commitment to sustainable development.

The design choices within John Cadbury House reflect an acute awareness of inclusivity and sustainability. The flooring selections from the Simply by Nature Carpet tile collection, in Arrange and Array styles, coupled with Nordic LVT in refined Elm wood tone, not only enhance the aesthetic appeal but also aid in navigation and spatial orientation without explicit signage.

The Simply By Nature collection introduces organic patterns and textures, bringing a sense of tranquillity and natural beauty to the workplace. This approach to interior design is emblematic of Aston University's philosophy: to merge functionality with environmental consciousness.
