The client: The world's largest manufacturer of construction, mining, and engineering equipment.
Being the rough-and-tumble business of manufacturing heavy-duty equipment, the client wanted the design of its new office to thematically transcend terrains and boundaries.
The new office had to resonate with the idea of limitless possibilities because it was not just a physical conglomeration but a unification of their values and principles (integrity, commitment, excellence & teamwork).
Design framework: A guide to create, build and innovate
Space Matrix Design Consultants, the firm chosen for the project, arrived at the Kutumb (family) concept which is a synthesis of many aspects that form a large family. The idea was to bring together various facilities under a single canopy to maximize engagement and foster collaboration.
Three significant aspects steered the design forward. The first is an arrival zone that embodies the simplicity and boldness of the brand; the second is the shared spaces on each floor, reinforcing the concept of Kutumb; the third is the combination of services that increases space efficiency.
Execution: Indian motifs with global functionality
As the reception is the first level of public interaction, it was envisioned as the place to showcase the client’s brand as the world’s largest equipment manufacturer. The effect came from the double-height volume of the space. The reception led to a large cafeteria which also doubled up as a town hall setup for informal gatherings.
The arrival and work areas are designed to provide seamless collaboration within the spaces. Private telephone rooms and agile work pockets emphasize flexibility and synergy. Unique light fixtures, artworks, fluted wood paneling, and rugs in accentuated colors add to the distinct charm of the office.
The design also incorporated a Swing - a unique motif of the local Indian culture – as a break from the contemporary outlook.
Flooring: Shaw Contract’s Color Frame | Color Form collection
After an extensive analysis, the design team chose five different shades from Shaw Contract’s Color Frame | Color Form that represented the multitude of terrains in India. The collection has unique shapes and diverse color hues that present immense creative possibilities.
The floor design across the eight floors of the office took inspiration from the desert sands of Western India, the igneous rock formations of central India, the farmland greens of South India, and the turquoise blues of coastal India.
The colors paired with various textures, not only enhanced the materiality of the spaces but also worked as wayfinders.
Net result: A vibrant, creative, and organic work environment
As envisioned, the new office stands true to the brand identity and value system of the client. The varied design elements are carefully blended to create a modern flare and embrace the client’s value system.
The essential takeaway of the project is a workspace neighborhood that facilitates connection, collaboration, and joy.
