Design Inspiration

Located on Lydiard Street and forming part of the broader Ballarat Station Precinct, The Goods Shed transforms the local area with its new food and beverage offerings and event spaces, housing a myriad of cafes and restaurants.

Drawing inspiration from place, locality and its heritage overlay, i2C and the collaborating teams ensured the retention of as much character as possible, with artefacts being salvaged from the previous buildings to use within the Goods Shed and surrounding areas of the precinct.

This project successfully marries the heritage and the new fit-out with great sensitivity. The colour palette is tight and neutral, providing warm natural finishes that speak to material health. From a community and cultural perspective, The Goods Shed contributes positively to the Ballarat city centre and the community of Ballarat itself.”

The re-use and sustainable recycling of existing elements was a particularly important element of the design, with a close working relationship, i2C was able to restore many of the existing elements in order to reduce the environmental impact of construction. The palette features a warm base with the new, locally sourced, timber battening wrapping the core of the space, paired with dual toned acoustic wall panelling in neutral colours. All the new finishes have a warmth and lightness that the design team felt were important to compliment the original heritage timber beams and columns, and contrast against the cool tones of the original bluestone.

The Goods Shed precinct as a whole has created a new hub of activity and culture for the residents of Ballarat, with spaces for art installations, performances, food trucks and festivals.
