DESIGN AWARDS ENTRY CONTENT: Designed specifically for years 9 and 10, the Academy Of Global Competency provides the students with a space to develop as individuals, collaborate and learn from one another, as well as gain a greater awareness of their position in their local and global community. This has been achieved by offering a diverse selection of workspaces, an inter-connected stair, flexible workspaces fostering smaller group conversations through to larger class-sized discussions, as well as individual desks and break out zones offering the students the option to choose how and with whom they work. With an aesthetic leaning towards the industrial, the existing concrete flooring of the site was paired with timber finishes to bring warmth, whilst stainless steel and both tiled and rendered surfaces work together to create a timeless design with touches of a more playful nature. Various blue hues are seen throughout the space, including in the way of carpet tiles, paint and tiling, which references the school’s colour, whilst complimented by the addition of rich mustards, greens and terracotta’s, breathing life into the space. Bringing a sense of the outdoors into the space also contributed to this, through the addition of plants, seeing both ground and high level planters designed to house these. Steering away from the typical hallmarks and ideas which are evocative of educational facilities and design, a residential look and feel was opted for when selecting furniture and finishes in order to create a welcoming sense of comfort.
